The Off-Site Links Checker checks the contents of all of the pages on the Administrative Site for missing off-site links. (Unlike the Local Links Checker, the Off-Site Links Checker won't run a partial publish. ) Off-Site Link checking can take several minutes, depending on the number of off-site links, the speed of the Internet connection, and the state of the off-site Web servers.
The Off-Site Links Checker presents two different displays: one while it is processing off-site links and another when the processing is done.
Display While Contacting Sites
While the Off-Site Links Checker is contacting sites it displays the URL of the link that it is attempting to reach:
A progress bar is displayed and once a second a "." (period) is drawn on the browser. If the site does not respond in 30 seconds, the attempt to reach that site times out and is reported as an error. This prevents sites that are temporarily not responding from stalling the Checker.
Display When Finished
The Off-Site Links Checker displays the missing link errors it finds for each URL in sections separated by horizontal lines followed by the URL:
Clicking on the URL opens the off-site page in question in a new window. Short Titles of Pages on your site that link to the URL are listed under the URL. To the right of each Short Title appear two command buttons:
Opens the page in question in the Page Editor. Errors are highlighted, making it easy to correct link errors. Saving the file in the Page Editor clears all error highlighting.
Opens the page in question in the Page Editor in Markup mode. Errors are highlighted, making it easy to correct link errors. Saving the file in the Page Editor clears all error highlighting.
The total number of link errors found is shown at the bottom of the page. If no errors are found, the Off-Site Links Checker says so.
