The Local Links Checker checks the contents of all of the pages on the Administrative Site for several kinds of local link errors.
The Local Links Checker finds four types of link errors:
- Missing Links : Examines pages for .LINK, .LINKIMG, and .IMG statements that name local pages, anchors, or files that don't exist.
- Cross Links to Private Content : Examines non-private pages for .LINK and .LINKIMG statements that name private pages or anchors. (Private pages can link to private or non-private pages, but non-private pages cannot link to private pages - otherwise they wouldn't be private.)
- Mismarked Unmarked Files : Examines the site for PDF and graphics files that are improperly marked as "Unused" on the Edit Content page.
- Unused Files and Anchors : Examines the site for files and anchors that are not linked to. (Unlinked files will not be visible on the Public Site.)
Missing Links Display
The Local Links Checker displays the missing link errors it finds for each page in sections separated by horizontal lines followed by the Short Title of the page:
Click on the Short Title to opens a new window containing the page in question. Position the cursor over the Short Title for a tooltip with the URL of the page.
To the right of the Short Title appear two command buttons:
Opens the page in question in the Page Editor. Errors are highlighted, making it easy to correct link errors. Saving the file in the Page Editor clears all error highlighting.
Opens the page in question in the Page Editor in Markup mode. Errors are highlighted, making it easy to correct link errors. Saving the file in the Page Editor clears all error highlighting.
Missing links are listed under the each page's Short Title.
The total number of link errors found is shown at the bottom of the Missing Links section. If no errors are found, then the Local Links Checker says so.
Cross Links Display
The display for Cross Links to private content is identical to the Missing Links display described above.
Mismarked Unused Files Display
The Local Links Checker displays the mismarked unused file errors as a list of URLs of the mismarked uploaded files (PDF files, image files, etc.). The URLs are hyperlinks to the usage pages for the files in question.
The total number of mismarked files is shown at the bottom of this section. If no such errors are found, then the Local Links Checker says so.
Unused Files and Anchors Display
The Local Links Checker displays the unused files and anchors errors as a list of the URLs of the unused files and anchors. The URLs are hyperlinks to the files or anchors in question.
The total number of unused files and anchors found is shown at the bottom of this section. If no such errors are found, then the Local Links Checker says so.
The Local Links Checker works slightly differently when individual files are marked for partial publishing on the Edit Content page. In that case, the marked files are checked in the context of the public site. If a file is marked for partial publish and the same file exists on the public site, it is checked using the administrative version. If a file is marked for partial publish and doesn't exist on the public site, it is checked as though it were added to the public site.
The list of unused files is taken from the published site. If you want to change the used/unused status of an upload file, then mark that file for partial publish.
If an error is found in a file on the public site, the [Edit] and [Medit] command buttons (described above) will not appear because the public site is not editable. In that case, you will need to remedy the error by making changes in the partial-publish files. For example, if you are partial-publishing pages that are missing anchors that existing pages on the public site expect, you will have to publish the files linking to the missing anchors as well (with the links removed, of course).
